Upon returning to ASFG, Ms. Tanya and Ms. Renee started planning how to implement these new tools into elementary curriculum. They have developed a specialized technology plan, integrating technology into math, reading, and writing. Digital storytelling is a tool being integrated into classrooms, helping to teach voice and word choice, which are two areas that ASFG writers struggle with (according to summative and formative assessments).
Every year, ASFG sends teaching and technology staff members to the JOSTI Conference. The Jefferson/Overseas Technology Institute (JOSTI) is a five-day technology conference for American Overseas Schools who are interested in "hands-on" training for integrating technology across various grade levels and curriculum. This annual conference is held at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, in Fairfax, Virginia. This year, we sent Ms. Tanya and Ms. Renee, both representing third grade, and Rafael de la Cruz representing tech center staff. Their time at JOSTI focused on cutting edge applications, with an emphasis on reading, writing and mathematics applications in the K-6 environment. They also focused on integrating and using technology tools and software in a variety of curricular areas. They learned different strategies for helping struggling readers, especially students with dyslexia.
