Fourth grade has started an exciting unit on weather. Technology has really helped us enhance our lessons and bring the unit to life. We have been using satellite images of weather conditions and students are reading digital versions of newspapers to learn about weather in all parts of the world. Third grade teachers are really starting to integrate technology into all subject areas. The newly started "Being A Writer" program comes with interactive whiteboard lessons that have been extremely helpful. Mentor texts are being projected and read aloud so that students can follow along to aid in comprehension. Teachers are taking advantage of the Power Teacher app on the iPads, allowing them to quickly and efficiently assess students. A number of teachers took an iPad training session, which initiated some amazing new ideas for classroom use. Science and Social Studies curriculum is being integrated, right now during our "Animals" unit, using the Brain Pop website and iPads to really engage the learners. Second grade lessons are continuing to engage students. The "Pulleys and Simple Machines" unit has really taken off, using videos from Youtube to demonstrate how these things work. Youtube is also being used for phonics and helpful sing-alongs. The classroom sets of computers are used daily, especially for individualized reading, using sites such as Raz-Kids, Bookflix, and Tumblebooks. Virtual math manipulatives are extremely helpful during Math In Focus lessons. The Spanish teachers have been using the computers for an animal research unit. Student engagement is high, especially during math lessons. The virtual math manipulatives are especially useful and hands-on. Pre-First teachers are using technology in a number of new ways. Math and phonics lessons are now being projected using an iPad and Airplay. Students are more engaged with interactive lessons using Mimio whiteboards and projectors. The iPads are being put into students' hands, utilizing the numerous interactive texts on Raz-Kids. Students are able to read and listen to leveled readers on this site, using newly purchased headphone splitters. |
