Students sketch parabolas in their notebooks and then check their work using the graphing calculator. The calculator provides great instant feedback about their paper and pencil work and also helps students find maximum and minimum values for word problems.
In class, the projector, Smart Notebook software and pen tablet help the teacher and students complete problems for everyone to see and use for review later from the teacher's webpage (click Enter as guest). Many students also post pictures of problems they solve on the Algebra Corner webpage where online tutors check their work and provide advice. The rest of the students have the chance to check all this work and learn from it. The online tutors also post their open office hours on the page to provide help for at least two hours every day after 5 pm. This year, this great resource has had almost 7000 visits! Poetry Outloud is an annual celebration of poetry and the spoken word. Each high school student chose a poem with which they felt a connection, memorized it and performed it to their class. The judges used a Google Form to assess each student on the same criteria: physical presence, voice articulation, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of understanding, and overall performance. The difficulty of the poem and the student's accuracy were also considered. In order for students to learn the results of their performance quickly, the spreadsheet associated with the form automatically calculated the scores. Congratulations to the finalists, teachers and judges who participated in the final round of competition in the auditorium.
The fourth annual Ciclo de Conferencias was a great success with the theme Entre hombre y mujer. Students used the Ciclo de Conferencias website to learn about the different workshops and choose the workshops they found most interesting. After all students had registered for the conference, each received an email with their schedule for the day. After the conference, students completed a reflection about the conference. |
