Music and technology

For General Music in 6th grade, students used Flipboard to curate information about social justice issues. They investigated and discussed the issue and wrote songs. Students were engaged in learning about the social justice issues they chose and writing their own original protest/social justice songs.
In 7th grade General Music, students are also using technology. They are using PicMonkey to create an album cover with 10 songs that define their life. Students enjoy making connections between music and their lives and sharing with other students.

Band students are also using technology. The 8th graders recently worked with Garageband to create music electronically. Now they are working with Finale Notepad and learning how to compose music that will represent their spring break.

History in Comic Form!

The students of 6th grade have been summarizing what they’ve learned in History class this year in a rather graphic and novel way: by creating a comic book! Ms. Esther Araiza’s students illustrated key moments from pre-history through the Middle Ages in a Google slides presentation that they formatted to look like a comic book.
The project was evaluated for technology class using five criteria: sequencing of information, originality, use of graphics, citation of sources, and document formatting. By explaining important events in history in their own way, students gained a deeper understanding of the content than they would from just reading it in a textbook.

Animated poetry

Fifth-grade students in Spanish class have created colorful animations that recite poetry! After using Garageband to record themselves reciting a poem, students uploaded an audio file to the Voki.com website and chose a customizable animated character to voice their words. The students improved their audio editing skills and their Spanish pronunciation while having fun at the same time! Another benefit of this particular assignment is that it allowed Ms. Aizuri to easily evaluate her students’ fluency and enunciation by simply clicking on the URL that students submitted to her. Listen to poems by Esteban, Claudina, Victoria or Rodolfo and see why students enjoy using Voki.
