Miss Jessi, our teacher assistant in N2, went to Singapore with her family for a week. While she was away, we were able to communicate with her by using FaceTime on the iPad. Afterwards, we discussed and reflected as a group on how this communication was possible.
Here are some of their answers:
- Julián: “Her voice got out of Miss Jessi’s mouth and got in her iPad through a button. Then, her voice flew and flew to Mexico and got to our classroom through the door and then into our iPad”.
- Julia P: “Miss Jessi’s video got into a hole in her iPad and travelled through light”
- Sebastián: “Her voice travelled through sound”
- Musa: “Her photo and her voice came through a tunnel, a big tunnel”
In PK5 students have been learning about big and little lines with the Handwriting Without Tears program. During Multimedia time, the students were able to do pair writing on the SmartBoard to create big and little lines and then they used those lines to trace and later form the letter E.
Within the classroom we have been using technology to introduce using the computer and iPad independently during center time. We have focused on correct use of these devices, how to turn them on, keep them clean, and use them with respect. The students have learned to take turns and choose their own games on the computer and their own apps on the iPad (from a vetted selection).
Children in K6 have been learning basic steps to be able to use the computer independently. Turning it on, getting to ASFG’s web page and then to the games from the elementary section. They also know how to turn the computer off properly.
| For our Open House, children made a video of the things they want to learn in school this year and on the night of Open House, parents made a video for their children as well. |
As a way to see into a child’s school experience, PK-K 11 students were given the opportunity to take photos using the classroom digital camera. Each child picked the photos he/she wanted to show peers and parents. Using iMovie, each child recorded an audio portion to accompany the images, giving the viewer a more complex appreciation of school. This movie was shown at Open House.
The children learned how to use a digital camera, how the cable from the camera to the computer transports their images, how to choose a “good” photo, and how to record their voice in iMovie.
